Near Perfect! September 4, 2010 MadMacs (Honolulu, HI United States) Just to add on the positive reviews (which immensely influenced my decision on which cooling pad to purchase) that this unit is great!
Does exactly what it says and does it with ease, economy and style.
My only minor wish was that a more effect method of keeping the laptop 'on' the pad itself was created. No matter how I sat or at what angle (short of a perfect right angle) my cpu kept sliding off the cooler. I read one reviewer who used velcro tabs to secure laptop & cooler to one another to address the problem. But that's not an option for me because, for all intents and purposes, the case will forever carry the adhesive tabs or remnants of such, as removal is virtually impossible. Not only is it unsightly, it becomes a factor if you ever decide to sell and upgrade.
The solution I came up is less elegant, but equally effective and has the bonus of not marring the surface of your cpu. Using the adhesive tabs on pre-made USPS postal boxes, cut three or four equal thin strips (about 11" long and 1/4" wide), making sure to cut within the adhesive area. Then, place the first strip where you mark the ideal position on the cooler. Then stack several more strips until it creates a shelf. Because my strips were not perfect, even using a paper cutter, I taped over the stack so that any remaining exposed adhesive would not affect your hands/palm.
Now whenever I pull my laptop off - it's perfect and smooth and ready for use at a presentation.
One additional note: The fan will keep going even when you put your laptop to sleep, which is fine if you're planning on working again. However, even though it's a very small drain on the battery, the cooler will stay 'on' until you pull the USB connector out.
A great unit at a great price that does a great job.
It Worked For Just Under a Year, Then Died on Me August 31, 2010 Katherine of Amazon (New England, USA) I don't want to be overly critical, but I am actively in the market for another cooling pad as I write this, and I will not buy this model again, for the following reasons:
1. The material it is made from is quite sturdy, but slick. Even with two little rubber flidgets that cram between the vent slots to provide a bit of resistance, my Dell Inspiron laptop would slip and slide around on the slick plastic. I would have to be very careful to position the thing appropriately and not make any fast moves because the laptop could slide right off the slippery surface. I wish the surface had a bit more "grip" to it--perhaps a bit of rubberized material to reduce the sliding around.
2. The thing had two fans; I honestly think three would have been better. One fan cooled an area of my laptop that never got hot!
3. I thought it was kind of pricey.
4. It puts your computer at an angle--that might be fine for people who want that, but there's no way to angle it up or down with little fold-out feet or anything of that nature--it it shaped like a wedge, so you're going to have to compensate for that shape if you're using it on a table (and some like that) or on your lap. Sometimes, I'd turn it the wrong way around to cool the parts of my laptop I wanted cooled, and to provide the angle that suited me while using it on my lap.
5. The USB cord is pretty much "just" long enough--there's not a lot of spare wire there (which means the USB will feel the strain if your computer slips off the slick surface of the cooling pad).
Now, on to the things I liked about the product:
1. It IS sturdy. The plastic isn't cheap. When it worked, it worked well enough, cooling my computer sufficiently to stop those pesky overheats. I did not abuse the cooling pad at all, but I am a heavy computer user, so I guess I just wore it out after just under 12 months of use.
2. I like the USB powered aspect. I had sufficient USB outlets for my purposes, but I suppose a "pass through" slot would have been nice--this one didn't have that but I didn't need it.
Just what I needed... August 30, 2010 P. McCants (Conroe, Texas) This is the perfect cooling pad for my needs. I use my laptop on the arm of my overstuffed couch and my last cooling pad didn't work at all because the vent was on the bottom, so the hot air had no place to go. This one has air vents in the back and the fan is able to exhaust the heat out into the room. I love it and it's the perfect size for my 15 inch laptop, but it would work fine for a 17 inch as well. Try it...you'll like it!
This fan is nearly silent. August 29, 2010 brenda This fan is so quiet that I thought it was not running. The only thing I do not like is that the cable which is designed to nest in grooves on the back looks like it's cut and I have only used this for a few weeks.
Whisper Quiet and Cools like Winter. August 27, 2010 Sadie (Ventura, CA United States) My laptop gets hot. It gets so hot, in fact, that the top cover melted. I always use it on a tray and even though my legs are a few inches away from the bottom of the tray I can feel the intense heat.
I purchased a different laptop cooling pad, which had an ultra long wire that always got in the way. Even though it cooled, it only lasted 6 months. The wire on this pad wraps around the bottom of the pad, allowing you to bring it out from either side or the back to attach the usb to your computer. No more long wires to get in the way.
My 17" wide notebook fits nicely on this pad. There is a slight angle, which is helpful when typing. The pad is nonskid, so you don't have to worry about your laptop sliding off of it. The back of the pad sits up higher allowing the air to flow out behind the laptop.
My laptop was cool to the touch after using this for over 2 hours. I couldn't even hear a slight hum it's so quiet. Best part? A three-year warrenty. So, if this baby dies in 6 months I won't have to spend the money on a brand new one.
